Holland America Koningsdam Review: My Epic Voyage

koningsdam cruise ship

The star of the spa is its thermal suite, one of the best I’ve seen across different cruise lines. Enjoy heated loungers while you take in the sea view through floor-to-ceiling windows, relax in a sauna, or enjoy a therapeutic steam room. But significantly, Koningsdam also sees the debut of a number of new features. Koningsdam joins Holland America Line’s prevailing fleet of premium mid-sized cruise ships. Keeping in line with their Dutch heritage, Koningsdam is a name that fuses together the Dutch word for “king” (Koning) and the long-established suffix of “dam” recognisable on all Holland America liners.

HAL enthusiasts who long for a more traditional cruise ship environment and design can still find it on the older, smaller and totally elegant Holland America cruise ships. Guests can revel in the exciting onboard entertainment available with a diverse selection of things to do that will captivate and delight all those present. Daytime activities aboard Koningsdam are endless, with demonstrations and cooking classes available in the ground-breaking Culinary Arts Centre. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site.

Lido Market

There’s so much to see and do on Koningsdam, the first of the cruise ships in our Pinnacle Class. If complete bliss is the destination, Koningsdam cruise ship is the journey. Fluid lines, light-filled spaces, and a blend of 21st century elegance and nautical tradition dazzles at every turn. King’s Blues Club for Memphis R&B, take in visually stunning entertainment at World Stage, or revisit classic hits at Billboard Onboard. There’s much to see and do on Koningsdam, the first of the cruise ships in Holland America Line’s Pinnacle class. The lounge hosts live musical performances (concerts, classical pieces, blues, popular hits from the 60s, sing-alongs) as well as a daily enrichment program (guest speakers, seminars, special events).

Grand Dutch Cafe

Well laid out with a contemporary design, cabins on the ship feel larger than they are. They range from 127-square foot solo cabins (new for the line) to the 1,290 square foot Pinnacle Suite, which features a living and dining room, sound system, and a plunge pool on the balcony. Also new are 32 family oceanview cabins, which can fit a party of five. Starting at 222 square feet, they feature a sofa bed and a pullout bunk bed, along with two bathrooms, so children can have one all to themselves. All cabins have two beds that can be converted into a double (except for the new, dedicated single cabins), a safe, mini-bar and hair dryer.

This enabled the guests to enjoy farm-to-table items from the dinner menu (veggie fare, 5 choices, dessert, cheese plate). The ingredients were displayed in a glass-enclosed garden area and harvested just before being served. The list of microgreens integrated in the recipes included garlic, mustard, licorice. Two lower beds convertible to one queen-size bed—our signature Mariner's Dream™ bed with plush Euro-Top mattresses, premium massage shower heads and a host of amenities are featured in these comfortable staterooms. Amenities include an adults-only area that is an oasis of relaxation and plenty of comfortable lounges and swanky bars.

Sing along, test your music trivia knowledge, or sit back and enjoy as chart-topping hits fill the room each night. Dining & Onboard Activities

I booked a guarantee and was assigned a VH category stateroom on Beethoven deck, 4141. Considered a partially obstructed cabin because I could see the top of the lifeboat; I liked the location mid-ship. I liked that this smaller vessel had fewer decks, 12 in all.

A real highlight is the bright and modern main dining room featuring an extraordinary two-storey wine tower, showcasing one of the finest wine collections at sea, and surrounded by magnificent ocean views. All the bathrooms in standard cabins are the same size with the same features, with slate gray tiling on the floor and white laminate on the walls. There is one basin, glass shelves and a trash can underneath. Showers have glass doors; powerful, multi-setting sprays; a footrest for shaving; and three dispensers containing Elemis-brand shower gel, shampoo and conditioner.

Spacious sundecks spread over 3 floors (decks 9-10 midship and aft, deck 11 aft) and are fitted with 2 swimming pools and 5 outdoor Jacuzzies (deck 9). The Lido Pool area (midship) is served by Lido Bar (beverages), Gelato (ice cream bar), Dive-In (fka Terrace Grill), New York Delly & Pizza (fast food) and Panorama Bar (beverages). Engage in Holland America's onboard activities, including culinary classes, digital workshops, regional experiences, art galleries, pools, sports courts, duty-free shopping and more. New York Deli & Pizza offers salads, pizza, sandwiches, desserts, fresh fruit, and late-night snacks. Room service is also complimentary and provides a full breakfast.

Since 2023, all HAL ships have pickleball courts (installed on the top deck) operated via an exclusive partnership with PPA-Professional Pickleball Association. HAL also offers complimentary beginner lessons (led by onboard instructors), sells branded pickleball starter kits (at the ship's retail shops) and Play Pickleball tutorial videos are included in the cabin TV programming. BLEND is a glass-enclosed winery room (capacity 10 seats) where are hosted daily wine blending sessions. These are reservations-only events (90 min sessions, $129 cover charge) with sommelier service. The BLEND venue is via partnership with the winemaker Chateau Ste Michelle Winery (Woodinville Washington). Wine-tasting events are seminar-like (led by a wine expert).

They include two lower beds convertible to one queen-size bed—our signature Mariner's Dream™ bed with plush Euro-Top mattresses, plus a shower, mini-bar and refrigerator. Exceptional dining options includes the new restaurant serving exquisite French seafood in a classic brasserie setting. Enjoy international cuisine and multi-course dinners at the lavish two-deck dining room with a comfortable Scandinavian ambiance and a huge two-story wine tower. Complimentary and convenient 24-hour in-room dining is also available.

Foodies and those who want to learn about the culinary arts will flock to the state-of-the-art show kitchen, which also offers specially designed programs for kids, tweens and teens. The main pool area encompasses a spectacular double-deck space with eateries, bars and a retractable glass roof. Exclusive to adults, the aft pool offers a peaceful retreat and the area also boasts two hot tubs as well as great views. In terms of variations, you'll find a few different shapes and sizes within the Veranda classification.

This heavenly retreat nurtures every aspect of your well-being with renowned spa rituals and healing touches. In the spa, pamper your skin with facial treatments featuring premium, naturally sourced ingredients. Holland America Line's youth activities program, Kids Club, offers an array of entertaining events for kids and teens ages 3-17, supervised by a full-time, professionally trained staff.

Carpets are dark mauve with light purple accenting, the walls are Scandinavian-style faux pine and there is a pretty duck-egg blue backdrop behind the bed. The sofa is a similar shade, with tasteful prints on the walls. During a leisurely day at sea, few places help you refresh, relax and rejuvenate like the Spa & Salon.
